The application EBM Stats Calc addresses this need by providing a practical tool for complex statistical calculations. It allows clinicians to determine number needed to treat (NNT) metrics from rates, percentages, or raw counts of events and patients. Furthermore, it enables the use of sensitivity, specificity, or likelihood ratios (LR+, LR-) to convert pretest probabilities into posttest probabilities, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV).

While the calculators themselves are somewhat standard within medical apps, the distinctive feature of this application lies in its utility for education. Students and residents often struggle to grasp how diagnostic test utility varies with pretest probability. Instead of relying solely on verbal explanations, the app offers an interactive demonstration. By adjusting the pretest probability with a slider, users can observe how the diagnostic utility—such as PPV and NPV—changes dynamically based on the data displayed in real time. This visualization effectively illustrates that test performance can fluctuate depending on the initial likelihood of disease.

Additionally, the app emphasizes that in many clinical scenarios, an imprecise estimate of pretest probability may have limited impact. For instance, clinicians may estimate a pretest probability of 40%, 50%, or 60% based on their judgment. The slider functionality demonstrates that minor variations in this estimate often do not significantly alter the diagnostic outcome when interpreting test results.
